Success Stories from the School of Rock Cast!
Abbie had never picked up a bass guitar before landing a role in School of Rock, but she turned that challenge into an opportunity. She came to her first lesson at Upbeat Music School full of enthusiasm and excitement for the show. Although it took a moment to get comfortable with the basics, she returned the following week noticeably more confident — and ready to get stuck into the setlist. From week one, we were learning the songs from the show, and every lesson since has built on that momentum. Her commitment and energy have been consistent throughout, and it’s been a joy to watch her grow into a confident bassist, ready to perform live on stage. Just a few months of hard work, and she’s gone from complete beginner to band-ready.
Max has been learning at Upbeat Music School since September 2024, and in just nine months, he’s gone from strength to strength — even winning Young Musician of the Year at Robert Gordon’s College. Already an excellent player when he joined, Max has said himself how much he’s grown since being taught by Liam. His love for the guitar is obvious in every lesson, and his enthusiasm is nothing short of infectious. Max brings a true rock star energy to everything he plays, which made him a perfect fit for the role of Zack in School of Rock — a role he’s now returning to for the second time. His performance of a Grade 5 blues piece, 662, alongside the epic Anastacia by his guitar hero Slash, showed off both his technical skill and commanding stage presence. I was immensely proud to see him win the award, and true to form, Max was already thinking about the next challenge before the applause had even faded.
Not just lessons!
At Upbeat, students don’t just learn an instrument—they experience what it means to be a musician. From professional studio recordings to live-band sessions, we give every student the chance to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting. Just last month, we took all our students into a recording studio to professionally record a song they’d been working on in lessons—complete with video footage captured by a professional videographer. Scroll down to hear what our students had to say and check out photos from our latest event at York Street Recording Studio!
